There are only two opportunities for a woman to survive in 18th century London—to marry a wealthy man or to become a prostitute. This series is centered on a woman who is forced to raise her daughters alone, and in desperation becomes a harlot, overstepping all the norms of morality.

  • Lucy is promised to Lord Repton, but is she prepared for the experience that awaits her? Lydia’s retaliation against Margaret might prevent her move to Soho, when the Wells are met with a baying mob outside their new home.
  • Margaret’s debts are mounting. Lydia’s campaigns against her and Florence’s religious tirades outside the brothel are taking a toll on business, and if Margaret and North can’t find a way to entice new clients the business could soon flounder. Can they embrace their notoriety, and use it to their advantage? An illicit masquerade could provide just the right type of publicity, but will it make them or ruin them?

Lucy has always imagined she’ll follow in the footsteps of her thriving and successful older sister. But she is finding her new profession more of a struggle than she ever imagined. Charlotte is determined to help introduce her younger sister to the highest echelons of society. But Charlotte is sailing close to the wind with Howard, and Lucy is in danger of becoming a pawn in their power play.

The masquerade could have other far reaching consequences - bringing Amelia closer to a surprising new friend, and offering Harriet an unexpected way to fight for her children. And though her orders are to keep up her nightly protests outside the Wells’ brothel, can Florence finally extricate herself from Lydia’s clutches?

Emily is struggling with life under Lydia’s rule, and she’s desperate to escape. Can she persuade Charles to help her? Lydia’s attention is engaged elsewhere as she continues to procure unsuspecting girls for Cunliffe.
  • Emily is brutally punished when Lydia catches her trying to escape, Margaret is thrilled when Lord Fallon shows interest in Lucy and Amelia's new friendship with Violet blossoms.
  • When Howard offers to be Lucy’s keeper, Margaret is delighted, but Lucy’s reaction will bring all three Wells women into terrible danger. Lydia is out for revenge, but will she track Emily Lacey down?
  • The Wells are reeling after Howard’s death, and someone is sure to hang for his murder. Can Margaret keep all her girls safe? Emily is trapped by Lydia and fears for her life - will anyone find her before it’s too late?
  • Emily’s escape pits Lydia and Cunliffe against one another - which of them can earn the Spartans’ trust? Margaret is in trouble, but to preserve her own life might cost another’s death. She’s faced with a terrible choice.
  • When an unyielding new Justice makes a surprise arrest, Margaret and Nancy must race to find witnesses to give evidence against Lydia Quigley. Could this finally be their chance to get Lydia to pay for her crimes?
  • While Charlotte struggles with horribly divided loyalties, the community gathers to share its grief. Tempers flare and the women rally against the injustice of the judiciary, with devastating consequences for Nancy.
  • Margaret must focus on business but a visit to the Pleasure Gardens leads to an unexpected confrontation. Charlotte tries to secure a powerful ally and gain Margaret's approval, while Lucy falls under Fallon's spell.

Meanwhile, on a whim, Lucy goes into business with two recent arrivals to the London scene. But what does she really know about her new business partners?
  • With Charlotte’s brothel fire-damaged and all of her savings up in smoke, she is determined to retaliate – but the Wells women will need to be clever: The Pinchers are violent men. Lucy offers to help her sister in a way that also benefits her new business. Meanwhile, in Bedlam, Lydia and Kate dream of escape, Lydia’s sights set on a return to her old home.
